Switzerland Wins Eurovision 2024

Switzerland wins Eurovision! Nemo, with their song “The Code,” escaped from a close ending to take home the trophy in 2024.

This was Switzerland’s third win in Eurovision history; the other two were very notable. Nemo joins the likes of Lys Assia, winner of the first contest in 1956, and Céline Dion, international superstar who got her big break by winning in 1988.

Switzerland won the contest on the back of a record-breaking score with the jury, collecting 365 points in the first phase. Nemo then took 226 votes from the televote, which was fifth place.

Their win was something of a palate cleanser after a very difficult 48 hours prior to the grand final.

Switzerland Wins Eurovision: Detailed Key Results

Switzerland took a total of 591 points, 365 from the juries (1st) and 226 from televoters (5th). Nemo finished 147 points ahead of France in the jury voting, while Croatia, Israel, Ukraine, and France all bested it in the televote. The only Swiss douze points in the televote was from Ukraine; however, with the juries, Nemo got 22 of them.

Croatia won the televote with 327 points, 14 ahead of Israel. Ukraine was a close third in the televote with 307 points, while France was further behind on 227. Slimane (FR) finished just one point ahead of Nemo with the viewers at home. Ireland and Italy were the only two other countries to score over 100 points in the televote.

Eurovision 2024: Facts and Factoids

Second place was Croatia’s best result as an independent country; a Croatian band, Riva, won the contest in 1989 for Yugoslavia.

This was Armenia’s first top-ten finish since 2016.

Portugal has made it to the top ten in two of the last three years.

12th place was Germany’s best finish since 2018; they came in last each of the prior two years, and second-to-last the two years before that.

Italy has finished in the top 10 seven contests in a row. Meanwhile, Ukraine is on a streak of four years in a row.

Switzerland Wins Eurovision 2024, But…

This is going to take some time to process. The last few days saw an unprecedented amount of turmoil within the Eurovision community. Dutch fans are no doubt very upset that their performer was dismissed during the contest, making the kind of history he never wanted to make, and for a contest that calls itself non-political, it was dominated by politics, both behind the scenes and out in the open. For those constantly getting updates on social media, it was a very tiresome experience, and there was no doubt a lot of fear about the contest’s stability. I mean, who would have envisioned Martin Österdahl getting loud boos just a week ago?

We made it through the 2024 contest, thanks in no small part to our queen, Petra Mede, but those questions are not going away any time soon. The controversies which exploded in the day or two prior to the grand final are not about to be put to bed just because the show is over. For now, however, let’s take a breath and regroup.

Congratulations to Nemo and Switzerland on a thrilling victory, but congratulations to all of the contestants. Special congratulations to Angelina Mango, our day-one favorite, and Baby Lasagna, who was so close, and yet so far, to bringing it home.
