Eurovision Top 100, #70: In corpore sano (Serbia, 2022)

We welcome Serbia back to the Eurovision Top 100 with a possible surprise entry: “In corpore sano,” their song by Konstrakta in 2022.

At this point, perhaps you do not know the story of The Euro Yard and why we watched this contest from its beginning – “backpacking through Eurovision history,” as we call it.  There is a lot of musical knowledge, talent, and beauty throughout the fabric of the contest.  Some of it is far in the past, and some is in the present.  One of the things I most wanted out of my total Eurovision experience is to be wowed by something that I have never seen before – and in this song, I was.

Artwork can take so many forms, visually, orally, and implicitly.  I got all the art I could handle from Konstrakta’s song.

What I Liked

I’m going to just say it: I love Konstrakta.  With all due respect to the lovely and talented Teya Dora, I was disappointed when she did not return in 2024.

This song gave me a lot of things that I want: Weird, catchy, memorable, artistic, and brilliant.  Yes, I would say this song was brilliant.  It told a story, it had a message, and it wove in enduring visuals.  In just the span of three minutes, Konstrakta gave us a commentary on the mental health crisis, criticism of Serbia’s healthcare system, imagery of the “secret” of beauty and the standards that surround it, and the ever iconic “bit-bit-bit-biti zdrava.”  I will never fail to clap along to it.

Her tone was measured but the delivery had an underlying intensity. I could talk about this song all day, but let’s stop here.

Other Facts

  • In 2022, Konstrakta broke the record for most Serbian points at Eurovision with 312.  She even beat out Marija Šerifović, Serbia’s lone winner and another Top 100 song, who received 268.
  • As noted, Konstrakta tried again to get through Serbia’s national final in 2024.  She placed fourth in the contest out of 16 with a song that was a parody of this one.
  • “In corpore sano” placed third in the 2022 second semifinal and fifth in the grand final.  It was Serbia’s first top-five finish since 2012.
  • She performed second-to-last in the grand final, in 24th position.
