Eurovision Top 100, #66: Prisluhni mi (Slovenia, 1995)

Today we say dober dan to Slovenia, who have entered the Eurovision Top 100 list at number 66, with Darja Švajger’s “Prisluhni mi.”

As of the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest, this is our highest-rated song from Slovenia.  In fact, the top two songs are both from Darja Švajger, so it is safe to say she impressed.

You know from our rating and evaluation system that good vocals can go a long way to helping a song soar in our rankings.  It does not help every song, and I will give you examples of songs with strong vocals that were not otherwise that great: “All” (UK 1957), “Absent Friend” (Sweden 1965), and “Opera” (Turkey 1983).  We have a real winner when we have found a song that can combine excellent singing with a decent composition, and a song that makes you feel something, whatever that may be.  Darja did that in 1995 and we are pleased to put her and Slovenia in the Top 100.

What I Liked

This was a fantastic vocal performance.  Švajger’s voice is so pure and clear, but she showed off a ton of range in just three minutes.  She also killed the ending – very powerful and a beautiful way to end it.

In terms of the lyrics, this was not bad at all.  Eurovision World has the lyrics transcript, should you wish to check them all out, but a few favorite lines included “You’re woven in a ray / You’re like a night, a touch of stars / You hide, glimmering in me.”

Other Facts

  • Darja Švajger returned to Eurovision in 1999 with “For a Thousand Years,” Slovenia’s first entry in English.  Peterca and Fajon also wrote that song for Švajger.
  • This was Slovenia’s first top-ten entry as an independent country.  She also tied for what is, as of 2024, Slovenia’s best performance in a Eurovision final (2001 was also seventh place).
  • Slovenia went 20th in the grand final in 1995.
