G’day, Australia: Welcome to the Eurovision Top 100 list, and you are entering at number 65 with Guy Sebastian’s “Tonight Again.”
The 2015 Eurovision Song Contest was a personal favorite of this website. Four songs from that year made it onto this Top 100 list. It’s difficult to say “this song should have won” when there are several others that can make the same claim, and one of them did. There is no shame placing in the top five in a year as strong as 2015.
This particular contest had a special feature: It was the first appearance of Australia. After decades of watching and loving it, their participation in Eurovision in 2015 was supposed to be a one-time entry. As we know – and thank our queen and savior, Petra Mede – it was not.

What I Liked
Australia did not come to play in 2015 – they came to slay. A country in that position may just have been happy to be there, but when you think about all of the musical talent which has come from Down Under, did anyone think they would just be “happy to be there?” Guy Sebastian knocked it out of the park with this performance, which was lively, interesting, fun, and a fitting effort for a first entry.
He was right about it being “one tough act to follow” because very few countries topped his vocals or live stage performance.
Other Facts
- This was Australia’s first official Eurovision performance, but their first unofficial performance was in 2014. Jessica Mauboy performed at the second semifinal as an interval act which celebrated Australia’s love of Eurovision. This helped pave the way for Guy’s 2015 performance. Mauboy would get her own entry to the contest in 2018.
- Australia went 12th in the grand final, and because they were only supposed to be in the contest once, they earned an automatic place there. They would not have to compete in a semifinal until 2016.
- Fifth place was Australia’s second-highest finish to date; the following year, 2016, was their best (2nd). We will have more to say about that one later; stay tuned.
