Eurovision Top 100, #61: Moi, tout simplement (Switzerland, 1993)

Hello again, Switzerland: You are back on the Eurovision Top 100 countdown with “Moi, tout simplement,” performed by Annie Cotton.

It was very obvious to me what Switzerland was trying to do in 1993, and this was at the time knowing none of the backstory: They were trying to recapture the Céline Dion magic.  They had a similar performer and another heavy-vocals song which had some common energy with “Ne partez pas sans moi.”  I would then come to learn that much like our beloved Céline, Annie Cotton is also Canadian.  For what it’s worth, for the most part, Switzerland’s gambit worked.  Cotton turned out an excellent performance.

1993 featured a few of our favorite Eurovision songs ever.  Therefore, you will see 1993 on here a few more times – and if this song at number 61 wasn’t even the best, you can imagine how high up the list they go.

What I Liked

I just loved this performance.  Any other year, it might have won, but it deserved its third-place finish (because the two songs ahead of it were two of the best Eurovision songs ever).  Cotton sang quite well, the performance had energy, the song had punch, and the lyrics were brilliant.  Every element of this was done well and this was a top-five Swiss entry.

With regard to those lyrics, see the full transcript at Eurovision World.  She tells a story in this song, and you know how much I like when it paints a picture rather than throwing out cliché lyrics.  It’s about show business trying to make her into something she is not, and those who don’t care about her.  She refers to those “gentlemen” as “trainers of performing dogs” and “snake charmers … on the great ball of fake dreams.”  Depth!

Other Facts

  • Third place was Switzerland’s best finish since they won it with Céline in 1988.  They would not break the top three again until 2021.
  • Annie Cotton has also had a career as a television actress in Canada.
  • Cotton and Switzerland performed fourth in the running order in the 1993 grand final.
