Eurovision Top 100 All-Time - Number 33 - Terminal 3 Eurovision Top 100 All-Time - Number 33 - Terminal 3

Eurovision Top 100, #33: Terminal 3 (Ireland, 1984)

At number 33 on the Eurovision Top 100 list, fittingly, it’s a song involving the number three: “Terminal 3” by Linda Martin.

A legend in her own right, Linda Martin is a Eurovision winner, but not for this song.  Some would say that this one is better than her victorious effort, “Why Me,” and I am one of them because that’s what the Top 100 list says.  The ranking is deserved, and this was one of the best entries of the 1980s.

In this number, Linda gave us something we had yet to see at the contest, and did it well – with a little help from an old friend, Johnny Logan.

What I Liked

There had not been any Eurovision songs like this one up until that point, and any others which may have come after were imitators.  This was fresh, new, and different, very unlike everything else we had seen from Ireland and the rest of the field in general.

There was a severe 80s vibe to this song, which is not a criticism, but a heartfelt compliment.  Aside from all of that energy, Linda made a great first impression at Eurovision as a performer.  Her vocals were very clean and she was the right person to sing this song.

Other Facts

  • Linda Martin’s winning effort would come in 1992, eight years after this performance, and it would kick off a stretch of three wins in a row for Ireland.
  • Johnny Logan, Eurovision’s first two-time winner, wrote both of the songs Linda Martin performed at the contest.
  • Martin finished first and second at Eurovision in her two appearances. She did not compete third time after winning.
  • She performed ninth in the running order out of 19 songs in 1984.
  • Martin and Ireland lost the contest by just eight points to Sweden.
