Notes on ESC 1962

In terms of a general overview of the contest, this one was not a favorite. On our all-time list (which you will see on this website at some point), this contest ranks in the bottom-half overall.

The quality of music was decent compared to the historical average scores we concocted, but there were some issues. For one thing, the power went out during the performances, and Luxembourg did not innovate with the stage or production. In case you think it’s too early for such things, keep in mind that France did in 1959, and the United Kingdom will (a lot) in the next contest in 1963.

As noted in the video, this was as of 2024 the last grand final to be held on a day other than Saturday (it was on a Sunday). The first time a Eurovision Song Contest was held on Saturday was just the year before in 1961. It may seem strange, but up through 1962, not only were the vast majority of contests away from Saturday, but most were during the week. 1961 was the first time it was held on a weekend.

Eurovision Song Contest 1962 Winner: France

The winning song in 1962 was by France, as Isabelle Aubret sang Un premier amour (“a first love.”) She won the contest with 26 points, twice as many as second-place Monaco. All but three countries awarded her points.

A new scoring system was introduced for 1962, whereupon juries awarded points to their top three songs (3, 2, 1). France received five of these trois points scores from the juries.
