With “Angel” from Malta in 2005, we are officially through the first half of The Euro Yard’s Eurovision Top 100 countdown.
There have been some great, iconic Eurovision songs from the past seventy years in the mix, and the one we will discuss today was similarly unforgettable. Though it did not take down a very popular Greek song in 2005, Malta tied its best-ever performance in the contest thanks to Chiara’s efforts.
With her second of three entries, Chiara proved that even in the modern era, sometimes, a great voice, without most of the flourishes of staging, still matters.

What I Liked
In 2005, you just didn’t get a lot of songs like this. My criticisms of this era of Eurovision will someday be well-documented, but that only makes a song like this stand out and shine. Chiara did not have dancing and flashy staging, but she had one of the best vocal performances of the 2000s at this contest.
Chiara sang the absolute hell out of this song and she owned the stage. In our view, this was Malta’s best Eurovision entry to date.
Other Facts
- Chiara finished third in her first Eurovision appearance in 1998, which at the time had also tied Malta’s best-ever finish.
- In 2002, Ira Losco finished in second for Malta, the mark which Chiara tied in 2005. As of the beginning of the 2025 contest, Malta has not finished in the top three again to date. In 2021, Destiny came in seventh place at Eurovision, which was the country’s best finish since Chiara in 2005. Destiny broke Chiara’s record for most grand final points scored by a Maltese act.
- Malta went third in the 2005 grand final, near the beginning of the slate of 24.
