Let’s throw it back to the 1970s again on the Eurovision Top 100 countdown. At number 58, we have “Diese Welt” and Top 100 gold-tier member Katja Ebstein.
Only a handful of performers can say that they made it to the Eurovision Song Contest three times or more. Katja Ebstein is one of them, and all of them made it into our Top 100. Not bad, I must say.
In the original grading run of the Eurovision Song Contest performances, we had this song rated the highest of any of Ebstein’s works. However, as you might be able to see now, we have this second. Her song from 1970, “Wunder gibt es immer wieder,” appeared at number 91. You may also infer there is one more to come.

What I Liked
For starters, the outfit was very sparkly; you knew she was going to bring her A-game after seeing that. As for the song itself, Ebstein has a great, powerful voice, and she put it to good use. For a song of its time period, it held up well back then and still does in the mid-2020s.
The lyrics are very interesting, and given the title of the song, it is not hard to figure out that it was an Earth-centric environmentalist piece. There is some fascinating imagery, for example, the first line (translated from German) describes the air as “like jasmine,” and a later verse describes our world as “a piece of dust floating in infinity.” It paints quite the picture. Other Facts
- This was the second of three Eurovision bids for Ebstein, the others being 1970 and 1980. You know her first song was “Wunder gibt es immer wieder,” and her third was “Theater.”
- Try though they might, Germany was not very successful at Eurovision throughout the first few decades. However, Ebstein finished in third place both in 1970 and 1971, which were Germany’s best finishes to that point. Germany would finish in third for a third-straight year in 1972 behind Mary Roos. For a country that didn’t win at all in the 1970s, they had numerous very strong vocal performances that decade.
- All three Eurovision Song Contests she participated in were either won by Ireland or took place in Ireland.
- Ebstein went fifth in the running order out of 18 entries – the top three all came within the first six songs.
