Eurovision Top 100 All-Time - Number 93 - Lady lady Eurovision Top 100 All-Time - Number 93 - Lady lady

Eurovision Top 100, #93: Lady, Lady (Spain, 1984)

Let’s welcome España to the Eurovision Top 100 as “Lady, Lady” enters at number 93 all-time.

Spain’s 1984 entry and subsequent high placement was a deserving one.  We joked in many of our early Eurovision preview videos from the 1960s that Spain, when it began appearing at the contest, would see things get better eventually.  This is because not only did the juries overlook them, but so did The Euro Yard.

They most certainly did get better, though: Spain won back-to-back years by the end of the decade, and despite no victories since 1969, they have had a reasonable amount of success since.  This includes some songs which deserved a better fate.

Was this song one of them?  No, as it more or less did how it should have, though we would have given it second place instead of third.

What I Liked

They could sing, of that there is no doubt.  Amaya Saizar was the lead singer, and she did a great job carrying the song.  As of the composition itself, it was catchy in its own way.  When you think of “catchy” songs from 1984, some would go straight to the winning song from Sweden, and that’s fair, but don’t tell me you can avoid hearing “lady, lady, lady” in your mind over and over again.

Aside from being a solid piece of music, I appreciated some of the imagery in the lyrics.  This may be the only Eurovision song in which “varnished ankle boots” were mentioned.

Other Facts

  • Spain went fourth in the running order in 1984.
  • All but two countries, Germany and Finland, gave points to Spain.  However, they received their only two douze points from Turkey and Portugal.
  • Nobody involved with this 1984 entry would be a part of any future Eurovision performance, not even as a backing singer or songwriter.
  • Spain has finished third in Eurovision twice: this song, and coincidentally, the next song on the Top 100.
