Eurovision Top 100 All-Time - Number 94 - Je suis l'enfant soleil Eurovision Top 100 All-Time - Number 94 - Je suis l'enfant soleil

Eurovision Top 100, #94: Je suis l’enfant soleil (France, 1979)

“Je suis l’enfant soleil” is next on the list at number 94, and it’s France once again getting into the Eurovision Top 100.

That should come as no surprise, as France is one of the original seven Eurovision countries, and has been in almost every contest since 1956.  When you have that many entries, you are bound to get some into the top tier.

The singer of their 1979 entry, Anne-Marie David, may not have represented her native France in the past, but she was no stranger to Eurovision.  David won Eurovision in 1973 under the flag of Luxembourg, singing a song you may see later on this list.

David tried to become the first person to win the Eurovision Song Contest twice.  She came up short, finishing in a close third in 1979 behind Israel and Spain.  However, we tip our caps to France and David this time as she delivered a stellar performance.

What I Liked

The star of this song was David’s voice.  She did not need staging, or even much help from her backup singers.  David pulled this off on her own efforts, and it was not that simple of a composition to sing, either.  In order to make it work, you have to be able to produce some vocal power, preferably a lot of it, and she did.

That finish is worth mentioning as well.  David ended it on a big note, capping off what was a very strong delivery.

Finally, the lyrics were great.  There was a depth that many Eurovision songs, and maybe most songs today, lack.  You might not recognize off the bat that this is a song about love, but read the lyrics: They are something else.

Other Facts

  • As mentioned, David won Eurovision in 1973 for Luxembourg with “Tu te reconnaîtras.”
  • David was not the only person on or off-stage for France with Eurovision experience.  All of the backing singers, the composer, the lyricist, and the conductor all had a role in multiple Eurovision Song Contests.  In fact, per Eurovision World, all of her backing singers were the same from her 1973 winning song.  David literally got the band back together and almost won a second time.
  • She performed 11th in the running order – coming immediately before her were Germany in fourth place and winning Israel.
